Improving jobsite productivity

The construction industry is constantly evolving. It follows the economic cycles and is affected by many factors such as trends, economic crises, laws, and government plans.

We can see a global growing demand for new infrastructures like schools, hospitals, houses, and offices.  The difficulty of these large-scale projects lies in their complexity, as they involve several trades and take a long time to complete.

According to a report released in August 2020,  “Pandemics and Construction Productivity: Quantifying the Impact” , the pandemic had a major impact on jobsite productivity.

The constant battle with labor shortage is an element that strongly impacts productivity and is a concern in many industries. As the Associated General Contractors of America  (AGC) says, 80% of construction companies cannot find workers to join their teams and complete their projects. Most contractors are trying to find ways to increase the productivity on jobsites while ensuring a safe environment for the workers and satisfying the customers’ needs.

Some solutions exist to increase workers’ efficiency and improve their working conditions:

  1. Safety

A safe construction site is a productive one. Accidents result in a great loss of productivity and manpower due to injuries and long recovery times. Construction accidents can also affect workers’ and coworkers’ spirit which will negatively impact their productivity. As a company owner and a team leader you should always ensure that you and your teams are using safe and reliable equipment to do the jobs. Make sure that there is a safety plan in place and that everyone is aware of each jobsite safety requirements. This will increase productivity and decrease injuries.

  • Equipment and supplies

Investing in the right equipment and in quality products will make a great difference for your teams. Always make sure that the equipment needed is delivered on time and that it is used correctly.

  • Training

Providing good training, with frequent updates, to your employees is one of the best solutions. Training will help your team members to be comfortable and confident at work. Increasing their ability and productivity will benefit the whole team. It is also a smart and simple way to retain talent.

  • Look for new technological products

An important aspect of improving productivity is to use technology and to improve your working methods. Continuous updating and refining working tools and habits are the best ways to keep up with new tools and technological advances. Changing your work habits will not be easy but it is one of the best ways to increase your work capacity.
