What is a Pump Jack?

First, a pump jack is a portable scaffolding system. It is installed on vertical poles that are tied to the wall by brackets. It allows the user to easily access the working area and to work safely. The system is easy to set up and can be adjusted to different working heights. A pump jack system is an inexpensive solution to get your job done in a timely and safe manner.

There are two types of pump jack systems on the market: aluminum and steel.  

The aluminum pump jack system is very durable and lightweight. Because of these properties, it is a portable system that is easily handled on jobsites, and compact for storage. When you are done working on one wall, it is easy to disassemble and to install on the next wall location. This system uses aluminum poles which have a rubber coating on one side to create a strong grip between the pole and the pump jack to support the platform and to allow easy motion up and down. The steel pump jack is a great option for casual users and small projects. This system is used with wooden poles that are built directly on the jobsite to meet its specific conditions. The steel cuts into the wood poles to provide secure support and safe up and down motion. The steel system is durable but runs at a higher cost because the wooden poles need to be replaced after each project. When working at height it is important to use the right tools.

EXTERIOR SCAFFOLDING

Exterior scaffolding is the safest solution. 

While using exterior scaffolding, we recommend installing 3 platforms of 19-in side by side to provide a full working deck of 57 in. by 84 in. (4.75 ft. X 7 ft.). This allows workers to feel comfortable and to move safely while working at height. The workers can also have their tools and some materials on the scaffolding, reducing the need to go up and down a ladder to get them. The platform load capacity, including the user and his material, is 75 lb/ft2.
 

When setting up scaffolding, the first thing to do is to properly level your installation with leveling jacks and checking the structure with a hand level. Leveling your scaffold increases the stability of the installation and allows you to work safely at height.

When working on a hard, even and flat surface, the scaffolding can be set on casters. This gives the user the possibility to easily move the scaffold tower from one working area to another.

INTERIOR PROJECTS 

Metaltech Interior Scaffolding brings a lot of flexibility to the user since the products are multi-functional. Some people use their 4’ high unit to move materials and tools from one working area to another. Some use it as a traditional access equipment, and others use it as a storage unit.

The 6’ Baker Scaffold is especially useful for many professionals such as painters, electricians, and drywall installer.  The I-CISC can be set up by one person in less than 15 minutes. The main asset of this unit is that it can be stacked up to 3 units high for a reach of 24’. When stacking units, it is recommended to use outriggers and a guardrail system. To meet OSHA and CSA regulations when working at height, a 3 to 1 ratio between the height and the smallest dimension, width or depth, must be respected. When units are stacked, the base needs to be broadened using the outriggers to increase stability of the installation. The guardrail is necessary to provide essential fall protection.

Did you know that falls from heights are the leading cause of deaths and injuries in the construction industry? Among these accidents, ladders are one of the leading causes of these fatalities.

 Causes of accidents

 The most common causes of accidents when using ladders are:

• Overreaching while using the ladder
• Not having three points of contact when climbing up and down the ladder
• Missing a step while climbing up or down the ladder
• Using a ladder that does not meet the project requirements
• Placing the ladder on uneven ground

Tips on how to prevent falls from ladders

Accidents can be avoided by following safe work practices. It is important to plan each project and to ensure that the job will be done safely. Here are some tips to prevent injuries when using ladders on jobsites:

1. Select the correct ladder ensuring that it has the load capacity needed.
2. Make sure that your ladder is tall enough to reach the work area.
3. Never stand on the top rungs of your ladder.
4. When climbing up and down, always maintain three points of contact with the ladder. This will ensure a safe use <<Two hands/a foot, or two feet/one hand>>.
5. Do not carry tools or materials in your hands when climbing the ladder.
6. Always climb facing the ladder and do not skip any steps.
7. Keep your body centered between the lateral uprights when working on the ladder.
8. Place the ladder on stable and leveled ground and always secure its base.

These tips can be useful and guide you when working at heights. We also recommend getting proper training as it will help avoid accidents and provide all the information to work safely on jobsites. Many associations, such as the American Ladder Institute, offer training programs.

Is a ladder the best option for you?

In addition to training and to applying the basic rules of using ladders properly, you may ask yourself the following questions to plan your work properly:

1. Do I need to hold heavy objects when climbing my ladder?
2. Is my working area too high to use a ladder?
3. Is it unsafe to use a ladder for this job?
4. Will I be working at heights for a long period of time?
5. Do I have to stretch on the side of the ladder to reach my working area?
